Fundamentally Transforming America…Collectivism’s Not-So-Secret Weapon

When Americans know this information, and do nothing about it, we don’t deserve the level of individual freedom we’ve historically enjoyed in this country…nor should we be entrusted with it.

An insightful Reuters article by David Wise “Will Snowden’s disclosures finally rein in the NSA?”:  http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2014/01/02/will-snowdens-disclosures-finally-rein-in-the-nsa/

In this article, David describes a similar, but larger, “government spying / propaganda / illegal activity” imbroglio from the 1970’s that most Americans have completely forgotten or ignored…the Church Committee investigations led by Senator Frank Church, which exposed putrid illegal government activities and abuses by the CIA, NSA, et al… the precursor to the Snowden disclosures.

In my view, the worst abuse uncovered in our own government’s investigation of itself was the CIA’s “Operation Mockingbird”, a CIA domestic propaganda machine which used “journalist” plants in the major American print and television media (New York Times, Washington Post, CBS, et al…), with the CEO’s of those organizations having full knowledge of the operation, to publish stories to influence domestic public opinion towards a viewpoint favourable to the CIA’s and current executive branch administration’s objectives.  The CIA is the only independent intelligence agency in the US government, reporting to the US President through the Director of National Intelligence, and is in effect the President’s personal army and intelligence operation.

In other words…if a US President wants the American public to be indoctrinated with his propaganda, his tool is the CIA’s Operation Mockingbird in the US mainstream media.  If a US President wants to suppress a viewpoint counter to his own, again, Operation Mockingbird to the rescue.  The CIA has power beyond imagination, and putting this genie back in the bottle in the interest of individual freedom is not a job for the meek or faint of heart / ordinary American voter…aggressive institutional opposition is guaranteed.

It’s easy to imagine a scenario where a less-than-honourable President, used by an aggressive political movement, might abuse this power to influence elections, etc…etc…

A final note:  Why did previous generations of Americans take the world to the literal brink of nuclear annihilation to prevent the spread of collectivism, and what has changed so dramatically that a large number of Americans now embrace it?  I think Stratfor’s George Friedman takes a good stab at it:  “The Crisis of the Middle Class and American Power” http://www.stratfor.com/weekly/crisis-middle-class-and-american-power?utm_source=freelist-f&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20131231&utm_term=Gweekly&utm_content=readmore&utm_source=Stratfor+Subscribers&utm_campaign=2f2bb08249-131231_Gweekly12_30_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1c43cbbe1e-2f2bb08249-49113913

We still have the freedom to vote…use it or lose it.
